Frequently Asked Questions

What is Laser Vision Correction?
Laser Vision Correction is an outpatient treatment using the "cool" light beam of an excimer laser to gently and precisely reshape the surface of the eye – the cornea- thereby improving vision. By using a variety of light patterns and pulses, a microscopic layer of corneal tissue is reshaped to allow the eye to be clearly focused for sharper vision.
We at N.E.W. Vision Center use the FDA-approved VISX Star S2 Excimer Laser system located at Theda Clark Medical Centerin Neenah, WI. This approval means that the FDA has recognized that Laser Vision Correction with the VISX laser is a safe and effective procedure.

What is the difference between LASIK, PRK and RK?
Both LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) use the VISX laser to remove a microscopic layer of tissue to correct the corneal shape for clear vision. In the PRK procedure, the laser is applied to the surface of the cornea. This requires the temporary removal of the surface "skin" layer which heals spontaneously in a few days. During this time there is some eye discomfort which can generally be easily managed with medications. The vision gradually improves over the first few weeks. Because of the somewhat slower return of vision, generally one eye is treated at a time to allow your continued functioning during the healing process. With LASIK, the laser is applied under a protective flap of corneal tissue which is then repositioned. This results in nearly immediate comfort and visual improvement usually within hours. RK (Radial Keratotomy) is a non-laser procedure where a series of microscopic incisions are made deep into the cornea to alter its shape. RK enjoyed a period of popularity for many years as the only available surgical method of vision correction. It has more recently begun to fall out of favor with the advent of laser procedures due to their greater precision, stability and predictability.
Is Laser Vision Correction safe?
Yes. Over one million patients have had Laser Vision Correction performed successfully. Dr. Merfeld is so confident in these procedures that he has had Laser Vision Correction himself. Our practice has been performing vision correction procedures since 1993 and Dr. Merfeld has been an active participant in the evolution of these techniques. He is a pioneer in lamellar corneal surgery having performed the first Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) procedures in this region for the correction of myopia and hyperopia, a technology which is now the foundation of modern LASIK surgery.
Does Laser Vision Correction hurt?
No, the treatment itself is painless. Through the use of topical anesthesia (eye drops) the eye is made numb. Some patients may experience a pressure-like sensation during LASIK when the protective flap is created but this is generally described as mild. The laser procedure itself causes no discomfort. After PRK, patients may experience a foreign body sensation for one to three days. Typically with LASIK, no discomfort is experienced. We usually do not even prescribe pain medications.
How long does the procedure take?
You will be in the laser suite for about ten to fifteen minutes for each eye treated. The actual laser time is commonly less than one minute per eye. Plan on being at the laser center for about a hour and a half.
How well will I see after Laser Vision Correction?
Because every person is different, results can vary. The large majority of people can expect vision similar to that which they have with their glasses or contact lenses. In fact, 98% of people see well enough to drive without corrective lenses, though occasionally some people still find thin glasses helpful when driving at night. Also, at some point you will probably require reading glasses as a normal part of aging. Clearly, the majority of our patients can now enjoy their lives without glasses or contacts.
Are there risks?
As with any medical procedure, there are always some risks. Fortunately, the occurrence of problems is rare because of the many safeguards in place and the precautions taken. The most common problem associated with vision correction procedures is undercorrection or overcorrection. These problems are usually not visually significant and can be treated. In a small percentage of people, a secondary enhancement may be needed to achieve the best result. We will explain risk factors in detail with you through the use of a video presentation as well as in writing. Dr. Merfeld will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
How soon can I return to work?
Believe it or not, many people return to work the day after treatment. You will be amazed at how quickly your eyes heal and your vision improves. Still, we usually suggest that you plan a few days off to adjust to your new vision.
What kind of follow-up will I need?
Prior to your procedure, we will provide you with detailed instructions regarding your eye care after Laser Vision Correction including the use of eye drops. We will check your eyes the next day and continue to monitor your vision.
Is Laser Vision Correction permanent?
Laser Vision Correction is permanent. Due to normal aging changes, the eventual need for reading glasses is likely, just as it is for a person born with 20/20 vision. A small percentage of nearsighted patients have progressive myopia and will continue to increase their myopia whether they have refractive surgery or not.

With the VISX Star laser we are able to correct a wide range of vision problems including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. You can fund Laser Vision Correction through your cafeteria plan at work. We offer a variety of payment options including affordable financing to help you manage the cost of these procedures.
How much does it cost?
We at N.E.W. Vision Center realize that, in addition to the technical considerations, your decision to have Laser Vision Correction will involve cost considerations as well. Until now, the cost of Laser Vision Correction has been prohibitive to many. This is because the traditional 'single-price' fee method requires lumping together all potential costs of providing the service, even if you don't require all of the services charged. We use an innovative, multi-level pricing that reduces cost by eliminating from your fee those services least likely to be needed by you. Because of this, we can now offer Laser Vision Correction for as low as $1250 per eye. Contact us to request detailed pricing information.
